• Family Background. 96 John Hewson Atwood had a son named Nicholas who married Olive Harman in 1569. They had a son that they named John, who married Joan Cloeson in 1612. John and his wife came from Surrey County, England to Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1635. He had a nephew named Harman, this name being the family name of his grandmother Olive Harman Atwood.

• Background Information. 81 It is likely that John Hewson Atwood became keeper of the King's Falcons. His brother-in-law was John Ownstead, Senior was the Seargeant of the Queen's Carriages, under Elizabeth.
The Atwoods remained in possession of most of the manor of Sanderstead, even after Henry VIII confiscated the church part of Sanderstead. They lived in London for most of the year, in the parish of St. Martin of the Fields.
John Hewson settled certain Sanderstead Manor lands on his youngest son, Thomas, who died in 1569. His son Robert died in 1568. John Hewson died in St. Martin's in 1562, while his wife, Margaret, died in 1558.
