Adam d’Avranches

   Another name for Adam is Adam d'Averenge.

The family of Yealand was founded by Adam d'Averenge, or Adam d'Avranches. The first William de Lancaster, Baron of Kendal, gave lands in Yealand and Silverdale to Adam. Later, Adam de Yeland, the grandson of Adam d'Avranches, the same manors which had been given to his grandfather. The charter connects Adam d'Avranches to Adam de Yeland:

"Willelmus de Lancastre dedit Ade de Yeland et heredibus suis, pro homagio et servicio suo, villam de yeland cum Selredale, cum omnibus pertinentiis suis, quas Willelmus de Lancastre, vetus, dedit Ade de Averenge, avo ejusdem Ade, pro homagio et servicio suo, scilicet unam Karucatam terre et dimidiam per servicium militare; Testibus, Gilberto de Lancastre, Rogero de Lancastre, Thoma de Bethom, Richardo de Coupland, Matheo de Redeman, &c.

The Sir Adam de Yeland of this document was the cousin of Sir Henry de Redmayne, who was son of Norman de Yeland of Redmayne, brother of Roger de Yealand who was the father of Sir Adam de Yeland of the above charter. There are two charters of grants given to the Canons of Cockersand, one by Roger de Yeland and the other by Sir Henry son of Norman Redmayne that connects them both to the demesnes in Yeland.
