Note II - The word Thorp is Saxon for Village. Becuns-Thorp means Beach-tree Village ; and in such a one the remained son of Grimbaldus¹ undoubtedly located, and was known by his place of resident as Ralph² de Bacons-Thorp. The early monumental brasses of the family have effigies under trees, and evident allusion to the origin of the name. Roger³ de Bacon, son of Ralph² was father of Robert⁴, who assumed the name of Bacon; and to make his identity clear, during the change of patronymic, was styled Robert⁴ Fitz Roger. He was a person of great power and cousin of Jeffrey Ridel Bishop of Ely in 1174. He was the father of Reginald⁵, who was father of Richard⁶, how having five sons, one of them, the fifth son, Sir Henry⁷ Bacon of Letheringsete, a justice itinerant, or Circuit Judge, would seem by the affix to his name to be inpossession of the estate of his distant cousin Peter⁶ de Leteringsete.

Note III- Playfair gives the line of descent from George³ as follows: Roger⁴, Robert⁵, Reginald⁶ Richard⁷, Reginald⁸, Richard⁹, Sir Henry¹⁰, Sir Henry¹¹ who married Margaret Ludham, Sir Roger¹² whose daughter Beatrix¹³ was the wife of Sir William Thorp.

Sir Roger Bacon, was a cammander in the wars during the time of Edward II & Edward III. He was the son of Sir Henry Bacon, son of another Sir Henry, a judge itinerant during the time of Henry III, and lineally descended from Grimbaldus, the first of this family in England.

Ralph, second son of Grimbald, who had also an interest in Letheringsete, had a son, Roger, father of Robert, who assumed the name of Bacon, and is sometimes called Robert Fitz Roger, a person of great power, and cousin of Jeff. Ridel Bishop of Ely; he was father of Reginald Bacon, who confirmed to Simon Fitz Simon the homage of Richard. At church, the of Laringsete, his sons and heirs, 12 acres of land and 3s. rent, in the 27th of Henry III. and held the eighth part of a fee of the Earl of Clare, and presented to a moiety of this church. The pedigree of the Bacons says he was father of Richard Bacon, who by Alice, daughter of Conan, son of Elias de Moulton had 5 sons; 1st Sir Robert Bacon, 2d Roger, called Doctor Mirabilis, 3d Sir Stephen, 4th Bartholomew, a justice in Eyre, and the 5th Sir Henry Bacon of Letheringset, justice itinerant.
