"Blackburgh, or Blackburgh Bolbay, is the ancient dwellinge of the famyly of Bolbay, of which I finde successively to have had this land, Sir Hamelyn, Sir Hugh, Sir Hameyln de Bolhay and James de Bolhay, the last, whose daughter Amisia was wief of John Cobham by whom he had issue James, Isabel, wief of John Bamfild, the ancestor of Bamfild, of Poltymore; Elisabeth, wief of Sir Hugh Perverell (by whom the earl of Huntington, by Hungerford, is descended); and Philip, wief of Nicholas Ingpen, from whom, by Fischet, Hill, & Cheyney, of Pinho, Walgrave, of Suffolk, is descended."

Anastacius, the sonne of Benedict Fitz Jordan, granted the manor of Woodford unto John Fitz Robert, which conveyed the same unto Geffry de Albamara, and gave it in marriage unto Sir Hugh de Bolhay, with Muriell his daughter, and Sir Reginald de Albamara, sonne of Galride, granted the demaisnes of the said mannor of Woodford unto Sir Hamelyn de Bolhay, his nephew, which died anno 50 Kinge Henry 3, & it descended unto James de Bolhay his son, who had issue Amicia, wief of John Cobham, a younger sonne of Cobham, of Kent."

• Background Information. 1281
Blackborough, a parish in east Devon, lying under the Blackdown hills, a few miles east of Collumpton, was held by the Bolays of Blackburgh-Bolhay. Hameline de Bolhay died 54 Henry III (1270), and Dame Philippa de Bolhay presented to the living of Blackborough, 8th Jan 1274/5. Here a branch of the Cobhams were located in Devon.

John de Cobham, described by Pole as a "younger son of Cobham in Kent," was the younger son of John de Cobham and Joan Septvans, and the brother of Henry Cobham, the first Baron, who died in Stoke-sub-Hamdon in 1339. The younger John Cobham married Amicia, daughter of James de Bolhay of Blackburgh-Bolhay, and inherited the manor. There were four children, James, his heir; Isabel who married John Bamfield of Poltimore; Elizabeth, to Sir Hugh Perverell, from whom the Hungerfords; and Philippa, to Nicholas Ingpen.
