• Background Information. Arnold de Bois (d. bef. 1166), who maried Emma younger daughter of Payn de Houghton, belonged to a family connected with Bois-Arnault in France and Thorpe Arnold in Leicestershire. His son Arnold (d. after 1216) [Harl. Chart. 84 H. 52] was with the rebels in 1216 but returned to great favour.[Rot. Lit. Claus. (Rec. Com.), i, passim] His son (and grandson of Emma Houghton) Arnold de Bois (d. 1277) [Cf. Harl. MS. 4714, fol. 4 d] died seised of the manor of Brafield in 1277, leaving a son and heir John (younger brother of another Arnold [Assize R. loc. cit.], who held the one knight's fee of William Grimbald in Little Houghton and Brafield in 1284. • Background Information. 1246 Ernald de Bosco is said to have been stewart to to Earl of Leicester (dead in 1168). This Earnald died during the reign of Henry II, and was succeeded by his son, also named Ernald de Bosco. This Ernald de Bosco is show as dead in the Pipe Roll of 7 John (1205-6) when Roger de Basingham appears in an entry on that roll as owing 700 Marks and seven palfreys to the exchequer for having the wardship of the land and heir of Ernald de Bosco and for having the marriage of the said heir and his sister, relict os the said Ernald.
