Ramiro I Vermúndez Rey de Asturias
- Born: 790-791, Asturias, Iberia 493
- Marriage: Urraca
- Died: 1 Feb 850, Liño, Iberia at age 60 493
- Buried: Oviedo 493
Another name for Ramiro was "Hijo de Bermudo I "el Diácono" y de Numila."
Noted events in his life were:
• Web Reference: Charles Cawley's Medieval Lands, Ramiro the son of Vermundo I "el Diácono: re de Asturias. 493 Ramiro was elected to succeed King Alfonso I in 842 as Ramiro I King of Asturias, although his succession was challenged by Nepociano whom he defeated. The Vikings invaded Galicia in 844 but were expelled by King Ramiro from La Coruña, from where they went south and attacked Seville.
His first wife is not know, but his second wife was Paterna. She is named wife of King Ramiro in the inscription commemorating the foundation of the church of Santa María del Narranco dated 848. Barrau-Dihigo refers to an epitaph naming "Urraca" as wife of "King Ramiro" (without specifying which King Ramiro). It appears that Salazar y Castro deduced from this information that Paterna was King Ramiro's first wife and that his second wife was Urraca, daughter of Diego Rodríguez Conde de Castilla, but this is clearly impossible chronologically given the likely birth date range of Conde Diego.
The Chronicle of Alfonso III records that, when elected as king, Ramiro was away having "travelled to the province of Vardulias to take a wife," presumably dating this marriage to 842. Pérez de Urbel states that, for the early Christian chroniclers, "Vardulias" covered what was later Castile. This must have been King Ramiro's second marriage considering the likely birth date of his eldest son.
• Web Reference: Wikipedia en español: Ramiro I de Asturias was a king of Asturias between 842 and 850. and the son of Bermudo I the Deacon, King of Asturias, and Queen Uzenda Nunilona, as well as grandson of Fruela Pérez and great-grandson of Pedro de Cantabria. He succeeded to the Asturian throne upon his second cousin King Alfonso II el Casto death, who died without leaving a successor.
His first wife may be a woman named Urraca, whose ancestry is unknown although its name indicates that it could be of Basque-Navarre origin. In documents, King Ramiro I of Asturias is mentioned along with Queen Urraca. They are also mentioned in the same document the infant Ordoño, son of both, and Garcia, half brother of the monarch.
Their children were:
• Ordoño I of Asturias, inherited the Asturian throne at the death of his father.
Subsequently, Ramiro I contracted a second marriage, around 842, when King Alfonso II el Casto died, with Paterna, who according to various authors was of Castilian origin. It appears in the chronicles of the time that, when Alfonso died II, Ramiro, who had not yet been proclaimed king, was in the lands of Castile preparing his second marriage.
The children were from this second marriage were:
• Garcia • Aldonza, who was born blind.
Ramiro married Urraca.
