Drogo fitz Pons and his brother Walter held at Domesday in Gloucestershire and both were succeeded in the early C12th by their nephew Richard fitz Pons [Keats-Rohan Domesday People I:180-181, 455-456]. This suggests that (1) that Drogo and Walter probably died without legitimate offspring and (2) there were at least three original brothers, Drogo, Walter and Pons (II) - all sons of Pons (I). Pons (II) had two sons, Richard fitz Pons (II) (heir of his uncles and ancestor of the Cliffords). On this picture Simon ancestor of the Poyntz family was probably a son of Pons (II) i.e. a brother of Richard.

Sanders and CP indicate that Richard fitz Pons was the brother (not the nephew) of Drogo and Walter. CP also seems to indicate that there was another brother Osbert (alive in 1130) who had a son Ralph. By inference CP seems to suggest that Simon fitz Pons was yet another brother. The earliest bearer in England of the name Poinz or Ponz appears to be Ponz, who gave three hides in the manor of Eaton (Hastings), Berkshire, to Westminster Abbey, and had been succed before 1086, when his won Walter son of Ponz held that manor in chief. He was also probably the Pons who witnessed a charter of the Conqueror to the abbey of Fécamp shortly before the conquest. His children were:

Walter, son of Ponz, from whom the family of Hasting of Eaton Hastings perobably descended
Drew, son of Ponz, had an equivalent holding in chief as shown in the Domesday Book
Osbert son of Ponz, was given Longney on Severn, Glos by William I, and gave it with the church to Malvern Priory in the time of Henry I. As Osbern son of Pontius, he mad an earlier gift to Pershore Abbey on behalf of his son, Ralph, a monk.
Richard son of Ponz, who married Maud, daughter of Walter of Gloucester. Maud had from her father in marriage Ullingswick, Herefordshire, which was susequently exchanged by her husband for leach, Gloucestershire. Their eldest son Simon occurs as a knight shortly before 1129, and from their other son, Walter the family of Clifford descended.
