In 1346, Peter Atte Wode & his wife Lawrance, sued to record title to a wide acreage in surrey, including lands in Sanderstead Parish. According to Gower in The History of Sanderstead, Peter Atwood paid a fine on Sanderstead Manor in 1346.

Peter had bough 13 hides, not including the church and village, but he continued to live at Wood Place. In 1359, he was licensed by his bishop to maintain a chapel of his own at Wood Place. This Peter was a close associate of William of Wickhyam, with whom he was a Forest Warden with. Peter was Clerk to Willaim as Justice in Eyre, and they were King's commissioners together in rebuilding old Windsor Castle.

The Atwood name originated in Coulsdon, a parish in Surrey, about twelve miles south of London, and adjoining Croydon and Sanderstea. At Coulsden are two estates called "Wood Place" and Hooley House." Peter Atte Wode, John Atte Wode and Geoffrey Atte Wode were tenants of the Abbey of Chertsey, holding these estares - their names appearing in 1313, 1346, 1357, 1384 - John Atte Wode (son or grandson of Peter), lessee of the manor from 1433 to 1455.

On 20 November 1382, John Newdigate and Laurencia, the widow of Peter atte Wode, assigned £6 14s. rents of the priory and convent of Stoke, with the assent of the abbot of Bec in Normandy, which rent the priory of Stoke were accustomed to receive of the priory of Newark, for the founding of a chantry of one canon in priest's orders in the conventual church of Newark, for the good estate of the king and Bishop Wykeham, and of Laurencia whilst living, and of the soul of Peter, and the souls of the king, bishop and Laurencia when dead [Winton. Epis. Reg., Wykeham, iii. ff. 191-3].

Cecilia wife of Sir Richard Turberville, granted her half of the estate at farm to Peter atte Wode, his wife Laurencia and their son Peter, in survivorship, and Peter atte Wode accounted for the manor of Chipstead in 1364 [Mins. Accts. bdle. 1092, no. 3]. Some years later, in 1381/2, Peter and his son both being dead [Close, 5 Ric. II, m. 24 d].
