• Background Information. 1554 From The American Genealogist, Volume 58, p. 244-246:
"George Jones, born about 1572, died in 1626, the year his will was written and probated. In the will he names a brother Thomas, but nothing further is known about his parents.
"He and his wife Agnes lived at Dinger, Somerset, where their first known child was born in 1598. Actually, we have no evidence that Agnes was the mother of the children, but no indication otherwise either. The first mention of her name is in his will. George, an innkeeper, was respected in the community, being one of the churchwardens in 1621.
"He prepared his will the 'last daye of Aprill 1626,' and it was probated 20 Nov 1626. He gave 'unto my wief all the Howshould stuff that I have in Croscombe and also I give her one Coverled wch is at the Inde (Inn) in Brownes keeping Soe shee delivr tjat coverlet wch is my daughter Dorothie by guifte of hir Grandmother wcj shee have in her custodye; to Poore of Dinder Three shillings fower pence; unto my sonne richard Twoe shillings; unto my daughter Elizabeth the Lease of the Howse or Tenement wch I have at Croscombe after the decease of Agnis my wief; And all the rest of my goodes unto my daughters Dorothie & Elizabeth.' He appointed the two daughters as Executrices, and 'My overseers is my brother Thomas and Henrie Hodges.' Witnesses were Joh Hix and Richard Wilmott."
The Jones children: Richard, bap. 20 Jun 1598, year of the earliest surviving Dinder bishop's transcripts, was in New England in 1635 with his wife Alice and died before 1642. Elizabeth, b. circa. 1691, m Feb 1635, Anthony Thatcher and in April of the same year sailed for New England where they first settled at Salem, then Marblehead and Yarmouth. Elizabeth survived when he died in 1667. Dorothy, b. circa 1603, m. Richard Sears or Sares, probably in Massachusetts about 1635. They accompanied the Thatchers and others to Yarmouth, and Dorothy died there. "Goody Sares was buried March 19, 1678-9" John, bap. 18 Jul 1605 at Dinder, bur. there 20 Jul 1605
