From the Domesday survey:
"Three Manors. In Torp (Thorp Arch), Orm, godwin, and Tor had three carucates of land for geld. the land is to three ploughs. Now Osbern has there three ploughs, and six villanes and seven bordards and two ploughs. A priest there, and a church, and the site a mill. one leuga in length and half in breadth. In King Edward's time it was worth four pounds : now ten shillings less.

Osbern's surname in the Domesday Servey was written De Arcis which would be Arches, a place in Normandy. Osbern de Arches was Sheriff of Yorkshire about 1100. It is not known when he died or when he was born, but he was succeeded by his eldest son, William de Arches. william along with his daughter Ivetta, found the Benedictine Priory at Nun Monkton. There was no male heir to this family, so Thorp passed to Ivetta who married twice, first to Roger de Flamville, and second to Adam de Brus, of Skelton, in Cleveland, who survived his wife Ivetta. Ivetta died in 1152, and was buried at Guisburgh Priory, which was founded by Robert de Brus in 1119.
