• Background Information: 252 Juan Durán is mentioned as early as 1628 as the husband of Catalina Bernal, daughter of Juan Griego and Pascula Bernal. Juan Durán was 29 years and when one of the settlers that came to New Mexico with Don Juan de Oñate in 1598. He was described as being somewhat swarthy, beardless and tall. He was the son of Juan Rodrígues and a native of the Valley of Toluca.
In 1632, Juan Durán and his wife were involved in a hex trial; here mention was made of a son, Nicolás Durán. His daughter, Catalina, was the wife of Juan Morán.
