Count Baldwin I, the ancestor of the counts of Flanders, first appears in history when he elopes, in 862, with Judith of France, the daughter of Charles the Bald, King of the West Franks. Judith had twice been the widow of two sucessive Anglo-Saxon kings, Æthelwulf and Æthelbald. Judith's brother, Louis, later Louis, King of France, assited her when she eloped with Baldwin I. Judith and Baldwin were married at Auxerre in 863.

Baudouin I was the count of Flanders from about 863 untill his death in 879. His father is often given as Odacre. The children of Baudouin and Judith were:

Charles, who died young
Baudouin II, born about 865/67, died 918, succeeded his fahter as the count of Flandres.
Raoul, born about 867/870, murdered 17 Jun 896.

Baudouin married Judith des Francs, daughter of Charles II "the Bald" Carolingien King of the West Franks, Holy Roman Emperor and Reine Ermentrude de Orléans, in Jan 862 in Senlis.⁵²⁹ (Judith des Francs was born circa 843 in Gaul ⁵²⁹ and died in 870 in Flanders.)
