• Web Reference: Baldwin I "Iron-arm". 174 Count Baldwin I, the ancestor of the counts of Flanders, first appears in history when he elopes, in 862, with Judith of France, the daughter of Charles the Bald, King of the West Franks. Judith had twice been the widow of two sucessive Anglo-Saxon kings, Æthelwulf and Æthelbald. Judith's brother, Louis, later Louis, King of France, assited her when she eloped with Baldwin I. Judith and Baldwin were married at Auxerre in 863.
