Hugues II participated in the First Crusade with his son Enguerrand, where they both won fame as military leaders. Hugues and Enguerrand participated in the Siege of Antioch in 1097, where they were central in raiding the Turkish forces. Hugues is last mentioned in the east during the Siege of Jerusalem in 1099.

William of Tyre names Hugues Comte de Saint-Pol among those who left on the First Crusade in 1096 with Robert Count of Flanders. [ WT I.XVII, p. 45] The same source records the presence at the capture of Acre in 1098 of "Hugo de Sancto Paulo et Engelrandus filius eius". [ WT I.XVII, p. 263] Albert of Aix records that "Hugues Comte de Saint Pol et son fils Engelran" captured Turkish prisoners [Albert of Aix (RHC), Liber III, Cap. XLVIII, p. 372]. He married (before 1091) Helissende de Ponthieu, daughter of Enguerrand [II] de Ponthieu Comte de Montreüil & his wife Adelais de Normandie. "Comes Hugo de Sancto Paulo" donated property to the abbey of Molesme with the consent of "uxoris sue Helisendis filiorumque suorum Ingelranni et Hugonis" by charter dated 17 Jun 1095 [Molesme II, 84, p. 89].

Hugues married Hélesinde de Ponthieu, daughter of Enguerran comte de Montreüil and Adeliza de Normandy. (Hélesinde de Ponthieu died after 17 Jun 1095.)
