• Background Information. 252 Diego López del Castillo had been in New Mexico twenty-six years around the year 1660. He had first married María Barragán in Santa Fe, and after her death got a dispensation to wed her first cousin, María Griego, also known as Maria de la Cruz Alemán, daughter of Juan Griego II. Diego, who gave his age as sixty-four in 1664, was a native of Sevilla, and residing in Santa Fe.
When the Indians rebelled in 1680 he was a Sargento Mayor more than eighty years old, according to his testimony; he was married and had two daughters with him. The following year he said he was ninety-six and a native of the "Kingdoms of Castile," and was described as "a very old man" with a family of daughters. The scribe noted that he was slender and healthy in spite of his many years. In marriage investigations of this period he gave his age as ninety-six and ninety-seven.
