• Background Information. 252 José González de Apodaca, legitimate son of the Diego Gonzáles de Apodaca and Sebastiana López García, and widower of Antonia Martín (who died in 1683) married Isabel Gutiérrez on August 12, 1686. He was thirty at the time. In 1681 he signed the muster-roll at Guadalupe del Paso, stating that he was twenty-eight years old and married. He was described as a native of New Mexico, of medium build, with a pock-marked, aquiline face, and straight hair. Like other people of the Salinas country, he was proficient in the Indian tongues, and so rendered valuable service as an interpreter during the Otermín Campaign of 1681. He and his family returned to New Mexico with the Reconquest.

José González de Apodaca returned to New Mexico in 1693 with his wife, Isabel Gutiérrez, and their known children, Juan Esteban and Juan Antonio. His daughter María, by his first wife, was married to Carlos López. Old José was still living in Chama in 1729, when he gave his age as seventy-four.

José González de Apodaca, 36, son of Diego de Apodaca and Sebastiana de Gracia, did not bring his wife Isabel Gutiérrez back to New Mexico in 1693 as stated in ONMF, 126] because she had died at El Paso in May of that year.
On June 3, he married Francisca Durán, widow of Antonio Gómez [DM, 1693, no. 21]. This was his third wife. Besides Juan Esteban and Juan Antonio, by Isabel Gutiérrez, there was an elder son, Francisco, by his first wife, Antonia Martín. This Francisco was twenty and living at Santa Cruz in 1692 when he married María López de Luna of Rio Abajo, October 5 [DM, 1692]. Juan Antonio de Apodaca [ONMF, 126], son of José de Apodaca and Isabel Gutiérrez, was 28 in 1710 when he married María Durán, 30, on January 2 [DM, 1709]. At Santa Cruz they had a daughter, María, May 12, 1711, and a son, Marcos, May 6, 1713. This Marcos and his wife Monica Valverde appear in ONMF on page 127.

• Background Information. 287 A José de Apadaca gave his age as 48 when he enlisted as a settler in El Paso on 22 Sep 1681. Apodaca participated in the failed reconquest lead by Otermíne in 1682. In January 1682, he was appointed interpreter of the Tiwa language.
José's first wife was Antonia Martín Herrera, who died before 1683. They had a daughter, María Gonzáles de Apodaca married Carlos López in 1698.
José married a second time to Isabel Gutiérrez, the daughter of Roque Gutiérrez and María de Tapia. José and Isabel had at least three children. Two sons married in 1709. Juan Esteban wed María Francisca Moya, a native of the Presidio del Gallo and daughter of Antonio Moya and Francisca Antonia de Guijosa. Juan Antonio married a second time to María Durán, daughter of Salvador Durán and Ana Márquez. Juan Antonio married a third time to Francisca Lucero de Godoy, daughter of Nicolás Lucero de Godoy and María Montoya, in 1716.
Isabel Guitérrez died in 1693, and José de Apodaca married a third time to Francisca Durán, widow of Antonio Gómez. José was still serving the presidial troops of El Paso in 1702. Francisca died before 1712 and José settled in Santa Cruz. He was living in Chama in 1729.
