• Background Information. 1540
Isabel Hazen, born 21 Jul 1662, was the daughter of Edward Hazen. Her father was an early settler at Rowley; his wife Elizabeth was buried 18 Sep 1649, and Edward married (second) Hannah Grant, daughter of Thomas and Hannah Grant. Edward was selectman in 1650-51-54-60-61-65-68 & a judge in 1666. He was buried at Rowley, 22 Jul 1683. His widow married. 17 Mar 1684, George Browne, of Haverhill, who adopted Richard Hazen as his heir: she died 15 Feb 1716.

Puritan Edward Hazen was the emigrant ancestor of the Hazen family. The first mention of him that has been found is in the Rowley, Massachusetts records and reads: "Elizabeth, wife of Edward Hazen, was buried 1640, September 18." In the records of surveys, 4 Feb 1661, he appears entitled to "seven gates," mneaning cattle rights on the town commons. The inventory of his estate amount to £404 7s 8d.

• Background Information. 1538
Edward Hazen was the immigrant ancestor. The first mention of his name can be found in the records of Rowley stating, "Elizabeth, wife of Edward Hassen, was buryed 1649 Sep 18." He was a man of substance and influence in the town. He was overseer or Selectman in 1650-1651, 1654, 1660-1661, 1665 & 1668 and judge of delinquents 1666. In the records of surveys, 4 Feb 1661, he appears entitled to "seven gates." These related to cattle rights on the town commons; the average number being three and no one had more than seven. The inventory of his estate amounted to £404 7s. 8d.

Nothing is know about his first wife, Elizabeth. He married a second time in Mar 1659 to Hannah, daughter of Thomas and Hannah Grant. He was buried in Rowley 22 Jul 1683. After this, his widow remarried 17 Mar 1684 to George Browne of Haverhill, who on 9 Sep 1693, adopted her youngest son Richard as the sole heir to his large estate. Lieut. Browne died 31 Oct 1699 at age 76; his wife, Hannah, died Feb 1716. The children of Edward Hazen and Hannah Grant, all born in Rowley, were:

• Elizabeth, b. 8 Mar 1650; m. 1 Apr 1970, Nathaniel, son of John and Bridget Harris of Rowley.
• Hannah, b. Sep 1653; m. William Gibson, and d. before 1683 leaving at least three children.
• John, b. 22 Sep 1655, likely died before his father and without issue.
• Thomas, b. 29 Feb 1658; d. in Norwich, Conneticut, 12 Apr 1753
• Edward, b. 10 Sep 1660; d. 1748
