• Background Information. 1282 Ela, second wife and widow of John de Meriet (who died in 1285), was mother of his son and next heir, John de Meriet [The late Rev. T. Hugo's "Hestercombe": see Proceedings of the Society in 1872, vol. xviii. pp. 142-6]. Shortly after her husband's death an Assignment of Dower was made to her, as shewn above.
Ela having married her second husband Roger Basset, her son John de Meriet, brought an action in the King's court before the Judges of Assize at York, claiming the dower which had been assigned to her out of the lands of his inheritance. Whereupon the King issued Precepts, dated 10 [April?] 30 E. I. (1302) to the Sherifls of Somerset and Lincoln to impanel juries, in their respective shires, of twelve knights and other freemen, to view and value all the lands and tenements of the inheritance of the said John de Meriet in Great Lopen and Great Stratton, in Somerset, and Castle-Carlton, Co. Lincoln, in which the said Roger Basset and Ela his wife claimed dower in her right.
