• Background Information. 141 On the death in 1230 of Maurice de Gant, grandson of Robert de Gant and Alice Paynel, Irnham and East Quantockshead and the remainder of his Paynel inheritance passed to his distant cousin Andrew Luterel, who was descended from Ralph Paynel the Domesday tenant by his second wife Maud, presumed to be a daughter and coheir of Richard de Surdeval. Andrew Luterel had previously inherited the estates held by Ralph Paynel in right of his second wife, which included Hooton Pagnell and other lands in West Ride Yorks. These, which had been held by William Paynel of Hooton, grandson of Ralph by his second wife, passed to Geoffrey Luterel, Andrew's father, by marriage with Frethesant, daughter and eventually sole heir of William Paynel. Irnham, East Quantockshead and Hooton Pagnell thus descended in the Luterel family.

Frethesant Paynell was the daughter and heir of William Paynell. William was the son of Alexander, the youngest son of Ralph Paynel. Lands in co. York, including the manor of Hooton (Paynell), had been acquired by Ralph through his married with Maud, presumed to be daughter of Richard de Surdeval. These were passed to Jordan Paynell, their son, and after his death to Alexander. Ralph's own holding as a Domesday tenant in chief, which included Drax, co. York, Irnham, co. Lincoln, and manors in Somerset and Devon, passed to his son William, presumably by an ealier marriage, from whom was descended Maurice de Gaunt. Alexander Paynel's marriage to Agnes, daughter of Robert Fossard, brought him land in Bramham. The heirs of his son William Paynel (of the younger branch) were two daughters, Frethesant Luterel and Isabel Bastard.
